I am still editing this piece. It is going to be a long all consuming piece about Design and what people thought when they first had enough time to dwell on it.
work in progress
Come back to check on the ongoing article about Design.
One of the things I always come back to when I think about design is a funny image from Space Odessy about this Monolith that appears in the middle of a neanderthal dwelling and the locals are flabbergasted about it. I think about it and I have thought – look at that brutalist piece of art.
1970 was truly an American renaissance and an era I have always enjoyed owing to the bauhaus movement and how men and women were involved in coming up with really sharp lines. Thy moved away from every sort of curve there ever was. Some of the most famous architects are from this era. The A line buildings owe their origins here.
The arts and crafts movement was another amazing era for design. A lot of how craftsman created homes and added a lot of whimsy and charm.
Some more design stories that I want to explore come from other parts of the world such as the pyramids which are as old as they come. A lot of the design from the global south has been lost to destruction of properties to envision new ones.
Geoffray Bawa is a glorious example of a prolific architect in the Indian subcontinent. He is known for his unique style in Sri Lanka. The buildings are used in architecture courses as a study in artistry and some iconic designs.
